The network will be developed and implemented in three main stages.

Stage 1 – Shah - Habshan - Ruwais

The first stage is the 266 km route for transporting sulphur from its sources at Shah and Habshan, in granulated
form, to its point of export at Ruwais.

With a double track main line, the network will have a single track from Liwa Junction to Shah; and Ruwais Junction to Ruwais. It will run 47 km across Sabkha, 65 km through 20-70m high sand dunes and 15km through 200m high sand dunes at Shah.

Stage 2 – Rest of the Abu Dhabi Emirate network

and connection to Dubai

Beyond the first stage, the next priority is connecting the railway to Mussafah, to the Gulf ports (Khalifa and Jebel Ali Ports) and the Saudi and Omani borders.

Timeline: The remainder of the mixed‐traffic network in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the connection to Jebel Ali Port is safeguarded and Preliminary Engineering is complete. Tendering process is in progress.

Stage 3 – Rest of the network in the Northern Emirates

Etihad rail is working closely with each of the Emirates involved to define and safeguard the route. Preliminary engineering is well underway.
